Phew… every time I look at these, the first thing I wonder is “Is Los Angeles ranked last this week? Or are they still ahead of Philadelphia?” I hope the Kings can at least stay in 29th place for the rest of the season.

David, in your opinion, I don’t know how much you know about the Kings, being a Leafs fan in Ottawa, but what do the Kings have to do this offseason to be more competitive in the 2007-08 season?

The gap is closing. As of today their the Flyers Power Rank has risen to .309 while the Kings has fallen to .371. I expect the Flyers remain in last throughout the season but the gap could close more.

As for the Kings, their primary need is goaltending and defensive minded role players. They have been hamstrung a bit this season by not being able to call up Jason LaBarbera du to having to go through re-entry waivers but that may be a blessing in disguise as LaBarbera has had an excellent season in the AHL which will boost his confidence. I am not sure if he will develop into a quality #1 goalie but having a highly successful season in the AHL will help.

But they need to get some veteren defensive minded players to help the young players out more. Blake is a good defenseman but he is not a defensive minded defenseman. Same for Visnovsky. A healthy Alyn McCauley will definitely help too. But the Kings have some good young talent so if the Kings can get the goaltending from LaBarbera and add some key role players they could be a decent team next season. With Frolov, Cammalleri, Kopitar, Visnovsky and Jack Johnson the potnetial is there for a pretty good set of players to build a team around. They just need to sort out their goaltending and Garon and Cloutier are not the answer.
