I said last week that a team in the #8-low 20’s position which put together a bit of a winning streak or a losing streak could see significant movement up or down the power rankings chart and this week is a perfect example of that. On the basis of big wins over quality teams like Dallas and Buffalo the Washington Capitals have jumped form 22nd to 9th in the power rankings. Ottawa, 16th to 10th, has also made a big jump up the charts. Going the other way is Edmonton who fell from 9th to 16th.

There are 8 games on the schedule and a few of them I think are worthy of keeping a close eye on. I think the Ottawa-New York Islanders game is an interesting one as I think it might tell a lot about how both teams will do the rest of the season. Ottawa has been winning a lot of games lately and are 5-1 in their last 6 but those win have mostly come against teams playing poorly (Philadelphia, Florida twice, Tampa) but the Islanders are a hot team having beaten a top team from the western conference (Dallas) and the best team in the NHL (Buffalo) in their last 2 games. Good teams figure out how to beat the hot teams. The New York Islanders are just looking to continue to establish some credibility and show that their record and success isn’t a fluke and beating a top Canadian team will do wonders for that. Should be a good game. The other game I think is worth takeing a look at is Carolina-Calgary because I think it is a match up of two quality teams still looking to find their way. Both teams have struggled with inconsistency but for different reasons. Carolina has struggled to get quality goaltending and Calgary has struggled to get consistent goal scoring. I wonder who is going to show up tonight.

Just four games on the schedule tonight but there are some good ones. Nashville-Phoenix probably isn’t worth watching but Montreal-Boston, Dallas-San Jose and Vancouver-Edmonton could all be pretty good games.

We have two cross-city rivalry games today as the Islanders take on the Rangers and the Ducks take on the Kings in a rematch of yesterday’s game which the Ducks won 4-3. I expect Anaheim to win again but the battle of New York could go either way in my opinion though without Yashin the Islanders are at a significant disadvantage.

There are thirteen games on the schedule tonight including a couple of premier rivalry games including Anaheim at Los Angeles, Toronto at Montreal, and Colorado at Vancouver. San Jose at Detroit, although not a traditional rival, has the potential to be a very good game as well.
