I’d like to announce a new contributor to HockeyAnalysis.com. His name is Bill Lyman and he currently writes a New Jersey Devils blog called The Devils Advocate. Bill will be writing about New Jersey as well as their division rivals and maybe other topics on occasion.

Maybe Bill can tell us if the Devils have any prospects at all on the horizon.

Albany was not a great team last year.

The River Rats were bad last year, and count on them being bad again this year. The Devils do have good prospects, but the Rats and their coaching staff, led by Robbie Ftorek, focus more on teaching the Devils system than winning. They’d rather have guys ready to play in Jersey than guys with Calder Cup rings.

The best prospect they have is Zach Parise. He comes from an NHL bloodline and was MVP of the World Junior Championship for the winning team USA. He should play in NJ this year. The next best they have is probably Travis Zajac, who is entering his soph year with the Fighting Sioux. The kid has NHL skill and leadership qualities, but he’s only 19. When his frame fills out, watch for him. They drafted Niklas Bergfors this year, argualbly the most highly touted Swede in the draft. He, along with Aleksander Suglubov, Peter Vrana, Aaron Voros, and Ahren Nittel will be the bright spots for the Rats this season, and expect one or two of them to crack the Devils lineup next season. They also have Alexander Sundstrom, Patrik Sundstrom’s son. It should be interesting to see how far the apple fell from the tree with him. Mike Pandolfo, Jay’s younger brother, was invited to camp this year as a tryout… he could be another interesting one to watch.
